What's Actually Important

In life it is very easy to get caught up in the worries and stresses of the moment. When things go wrong or just don't go quite to plan and seem to fall to pieces, we can end up expending all our time and energy worrying about it, while not necessarily doing anything about it; because often there isn't a lot that can be done. Once something goes wrong, it goes wrong and there's no turning back the clock to change that.

Everyone feels emotions other than happiness sometimes, and there is nothing wrong with that, it is 100% naturally human. The problem occurs when those negative feelings, particularly stress and worry, seem to consume every minute of our waking existence.

Work, university, money, friends, family, other relationships, they can all be things we find ourselves worrying and stressing over at some point; I know I do. But many of the problems that come along in these areas of our life are, in the grand scheme of things, insignificant.

That petty fight you had with someone today, that bad mark you got on that one assignment, that order you stuffed up, that little mistake you made, they all suck at the time, and sometimes we can feel like they are the end of the world and we sit and brood on them for days at a time.

Take a minute to step back though; look at this problem or issue from a little bit further away for a minute. Think to yourself, will this matter to me in a couple of years, a couple of months, a couple of weeks even? Be honest with yourself in this question, don't let your negative mind answer it for you. I bet 9/10 times you'll find the answer is no. When you realise the answer is no, let that worry or stress go.

Spending time worrying and stressing prevents you from appreciating what is going on around you, and all the amazing things you do have. It stops you from grabbing hold of opportunities that come your way and blinds you to the beautiful thing right in front of you.

Worrying less and stressing less is something I think we could all work on, including myself. So from today I challenge you, each time something negative begins to sit and eat away at you for an extended period of time, stop, take a deep breath, and let it go. You only have one life, don't waste it worrying about the insignificant.
